Diagnosis

Laophonte having a single large recurved spur dorsally on the posterior margin of the head segment and paired spines dorsolaterally on each of the following body segments except the last one or two. Rostrum large and expanded. A1 6-segmented, with 4 segments in the basal portion with is composed of 3 long segments and a short fourth one bearing an aesthetasc; terminal portion with end segment longer than penultimate one. P1 coxa and basis long and slender. P1 exopod 2-segmented; 2 segments may be partially fused; exopod very slender and not exceeding half the length of the P1 endopod-1.

P5 baseoendopod narrow, endopodal lobe with 4 or 5 setae, exopod elongate and with 3 setae.

Remarks.- The above setal formula and type of P5 are not found in any other species of Laophonte. These features, together with the modification of the body and rostrum prompted Nicholls (1941) to errect the new genus Echinolaophonte.
