Diagnosis
Carapace subquadrilateral, quadrilateral, or trapezoidal. Frontal margin typically with more or less well-developed latero-inferior lobes. Infraorbital margin with typically prominent inner tooth or lobe; also, internal to this, a more or less strongly developed occlusive, intercalated orbital tooth abutting basal antennal segment; orbit may be open, or closed either by occlusive orbital tooth meeting front, or by projection of basal antennal segment. Sternal plastron greatly widened; sternite 8 only just visible beside abdomen in front of lateral margin of second (and sometimes also first) abdominal segment, or more obvious, with the suture with sternite 7 clearly visible. Position of male genital opening variable: clearly sternal with penis free but lying in more or less well-developed groove; becoming sternal with penis sheathed and/or protected proximally by a covered groove; or sternal, with penis lying in closed canal. Male abdomen with seven segments, typically appearing triangular but shape variable. Male first gonopod long and thin, very narrow apically; armed with small, more or less prominent tubercles over its length; second gonopod short.
