Type species:
Kyphosus bigibbus Lacépède, 1801 by monotypy.
Introduction
We follow Sakai & Nakabo (1995) and Knudsen & Clements (2013) in regarding Kyphosus gibsoni Ogilby, 1912 as a junior synonym of K. vaigiensis. The use of K. gibsoni by some authors (e.g. Allen 1985; Kuiter 1993) represent misidentifications of other species, frequently K. bigibbus (see Knudsen & Clements 2013). McCulloch (1929) recorded K. indicus from WA however Sakai & Nakabo (2006) and Knudsen & Clements (2013) identify K. indicus as a junior synonym of K. cinerascans. We also follow Knudsen & Clements (2013) in treating K. pacificus Sakai & Nakabo, 2004 as a junior synonym of K. sectatrix, increasing the range of that species to include Australia.
