Introduction

This genus includes 27 species scattered across the tropical parts of the world with a single species recorded in coastal parts of Queensland. The generic name honours "William Lucas Distant (1845–1922), who first described the genus Matutinus, in recognition of his pioneering work in delphacid taxonomy." (Bellis and Donaldson 2015).

Diagnosis

Vertex of head a little longer than broad, somewhat narrow, concave, a little broader at base than at apex, the lateral margins strongly carinate, the apex triangulate; antenna with the first and second joints robust; face very much longer than broad, centrally and laterally strongly carinate, the central carination prominent at apex, two small ocelli on posterior margin; clypeus nearly half the length of face, centrally carinate; pronotum a little shorter than head, tricarinate; mesonotum slightly longer than head and pronotum together, tricarinate, the disk longitudinally flattened; tegmina more than twice as broad as long, the veins few and longitudinal, obliquely triangulate beyond middle, the costal membrane broad; wings considerably broader than tegmina; posterior tibiae unarmed (Distant 1917, as Matutinus).
