Diagnosis
D. similis appears to be closely related to D. furcatus. It differs from the latter in the shape and proportions of the posterior part of its body (free thoracic segments, genital segment and abdomen). The forked spines of D. furcatus are confined to the anterior 1/3 of the genital segment while in the present species they extend over some 2/3 of that segment. The two species also differ in size. Tha mature female of the present species measures 2.84mm, while that of D. furcatus is 5.5mm long. Finally, while the present species is known to parasitise highly specialised teleosts, D. furcatus has been described so far only from an orectolobid shark.
