Family DERAIOPHORIDAE Trägårdh, 1952

Introduction

The cosmopolitan family Deraiophoridae as used here includes about 36 described species. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1993) placed all the species in the single genus Deraiophorus. They arranged the species in a series of species groups, which were previously treated as genera or subgenera. The genus has been recorded from Africa, Polynesia, Japan, and South America, but the highest species diversity appears to be in southeast Asia, including New Guinea. Four species are known from Australia, all described from rainforest litter in tropical Queensland (reviewed by Hirschmann 1973a, 1973b; Zirngiebl-Nicol 1973). Domrow (1957) reported Deraiophorus biroi Canestrini, 1897 from Australia, but this was a misidentification of specimens that were later described as D. neobiroi Hirschmann, 1973.
