Genus Delphacodes Fieber, 1866

Compiler and date details

9 December 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Fieber (1866) created Delphacodes as a subgenus of Delphax Latreille simply as a name in a key. The name was validated in a footnote by Kirkaldy (1904: 177) who designated Delphacodes mulsanti (Fieber) as type species. Melichar (1901) created a junior homonym by using Delphacodes as the name of a new genus for a species from Europe, now Pseudaraeopus lethierryi (Mulsant & Rey). The relevance of this generic name to Australia has yet to be confirmed. There are currently two Australian species placed in the genus, one from the wet tropics of North Queensland and the other on Christmas Island. However, whether these are truly congeneric with the European D. mulsanti needs to be examined. It is very possible that Delphacodes is not represented in Australia so full details are not given here.

Diagnosis

Fieber (1866) differentiated Delphacodes from Delphax on the basis that the frontal carinae of Delphax are very fine and percurrent while those of Delphacodes are thicker, rounded or sharp, occasionally not percurrent.
