Family DIARTHROPHALLIDAE Trägårdh, 1946

Introduction

The family Diarthrophallidae includes 18 genera and about 50 species that occur on beetles in the family Passalidae (Lindquist et al. 2009). The Australian fauna includes three genera and six species, most of which were described by Womersley (1961). The family was revised comprehensively by Schuster & Summers (1978), and no new Australian taxa have been added since that time. All life cycle stages of these mites are found on their beetle hosts, but their feeding has not been studied.
