Introduction
The largest and most widespread family of freshwater Calanoida is the Diaptomidae. Species in this family occur in a wide range of regions from polar to tropical latitudes, and they tolerate a variety of temperatures and salinity regimes. Despite high numbers in the Northern Hemisphere and Africa, this family is rare in Australasia. There are 59 genera (only two occur in Australia), and over 450 species. See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 98) for more details as well as a key to the genera.
