Introduction

The Cypriniformes, one of the largest orders of fishes, includes between six and eight families. Six families are listed in Nelson (2006), Wiley & Johnson (2010) and Eschmeyer (2011). Recent studies based on molecular analyses differ from previous work and recognise eight families within the order (Saitoh et al. 2006; Šlechtová et al. 2007; Mayden et al. 2009; Simons & Gidmark 2010). Eschmeyer (2011) lists 3952 valid species in the order. The group is predominantly freshwater and occurs throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. Relationships are discussed by Siebert (1987), Fink & Fink (1996), Šlechtová et al. (2007), Mayden et al. (2009), Simons & Gidmark (2010) and Wiley & Johnson (2010). Considerable morphological and molecular research on cypriniform fishes is being undertaken for the Cypriniformes Tree of Life Project. All cypriniform fishes found in Australian waters have been introduced, and several are invasive.
