Clavularia australiensis Hickson, S.J. 1890. Preliminary report on a collection of Alcyonaria from Port Philip. Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria 2(2): 136-140 [137-139].
Type data:

Syntype(s) BMNH 1939-6-12-004 two colonies each encrusting a sponge fragment (one colony is close to "Specimen 1" of Hickson's Clavularis australiensis Variety A, in Hickson 1894: 338-339, pl. L, Fig. 3. The difference is possibly due to the removal of some of the colony. This colony seems to be specimen 17 in the original 1890 publication. The other colony is presumably "Specimen 2" in Hickson 1894: 339, and would therefore correspond to specimen 11 in the 1890 publication. Samples are accessioned with the date of 1894), Port Phillip Bay, Victoria; CUMZ I.32935 ribbon-like stolons encrusting piece of mussell shell (this is either specimen 2 or 3 of Clavularia australiensis Variety B, in Hickson 1894: 339-340; this would correspond to either specimen 18 or 24 in the original 1890 publication), Port Phillip Bay, Victoria; CUMZ I.32940.A-B ribbon-like stolons encrusting pieces of mussell shell (this is either specimen 2 or 3 of Clavularia australiensis Variety B, in Hickson 1894: 339-340; this would correspond to either specimen 18 or 24 in the original 1890 publication), Port Phillip, Victoria.

This is not a true Clavularia species and the correct identity of this taxon is unknown.
