Diagnosis

Carapace very wide, transversely oval, subelliptical or indistinctly subhexagonal; convex in both directions; supra-orbital fissures may be absent, infraorbital margin variously modified; front much narrower than posterior border; anterolateral border convex, toothed or entire. Basal antennal segment narrow, long, lying obliquely, not lobulate, antennal flagellum lying in orbital hiatus. Lobe on first maxilliped ('portunid lobe') usually present. Chelipeds longer than ambulatory legs, spines on cheliped segments reduced in number or absent. Dactyli of last pair of legs styliform or lanceolate. (After Apel & Spiridonov 1998).
