Diagnosis

Carapace subcircular or subhexagonal, usually not much broader than long; surface either smooth or traversed on each side by ridges; eyestalks of normal length; anterolateral border with five or six teeth or nearly entire. Basal antennal segment lying obliquely, with anterolateral lobe entering orbital hiatus, peduncle and flagellum excluded from orbit. Chelipeds of about same length or little longer than ambulatory legs, bearing a reduced set of spines on merus, carpus and palm; fingers not grooved or very weakly grooved. Walking legs short; last leg variously modified, varying from paddle-shaped to ending in a claw-shaped dactylus. Male first gonopod with subterminal spines. (After Apel & Spiridonov 1998).
