Introduction
Callanthiids are found in the eastern Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Currently, two genera and nine species are known, two in the genus Callanthias from Australia. Anderson & Johnson (1984) and Johnson (1984) defined the family and recognised it as distinct from the family Serranidae, in which the genera had been placed previously. Anderson (1999) provided a key to genera. Maximum size attained is about 50 cm.
