Compiler and date details

May 2012 - Peter Davie, Queensland Museum, Brisbane

Introduction

Cyclodorippids are typically very small crabs. They are relatively poorly represented in most museum collections, but can be moderately abundant in some dredge hauls. Preferring soft sand to sandy mud bottoms, they are found from the outer continental shelf into the moderately deep waters of the continental slope. The family has been revised extensively in recent years by Tavares (1991, 1992, 1993).

Diagnosis

Carapace subcircular or subpentagonal. Orbits always present. Third maxilliped elongate, covering buccal cavity; exopod without flagellum. Pereiopods with movable articulation between basis and ischium; first two pairs long and thin; fourth and fifth pereiopods reduced and positioned dorsally, usually with special terminal apparatus. Wide sternal plate with short sterno-abdominal cavity more or less defined and deep; female with sternal grooves. First abdominal segments visible dorsally; number of abdominal segments variable in both sexes; uropods absent. Male and female genital openings coxal; spermathecal apertures usually at level of genital openings, sometimes located more anteriorly.
