Introduction

The name Cyclocoela was first applied by Krumbach (1925: 939) for Lobata (e.g., Ganesha, Bolinopsis, Ocyropsis) and Cestum. It was ignored until Ospovat (1985) applied the name to the orders Beroida, Cambojiida, Cestida, Cryptolobiferida, Ganeshida, Lobiferida and Thalassocalycida, based on the common feature of the presence of a peristomal system of gastral canals.

The subclass as envisaged by Ospovat is unlikely to be widely adopted, because it groups taxa in a way that is inconsistent with DNA results. The phylogenetic hypotheses generated by molecular analyses by Podar et al. (2001) suggested a closer relationship between the Beroida and some of the Cydippida than to other groups, with the Cydippida being paraphyletic or polyphyletic.
