Family CRANGONIDAE Haworth, 1825

Compiler and date details

May 2012 - Peter Davie, Queensland Museum, Brisbane

Introduction

The Crangonidae is virtually a cosmopolitan family of shrimps, found from the littoral zone down to abyssal depths (Chace 1984). Currently 20 genera are recognised, of which eleven are found in Australian waters. There has been little modern work on Australian crangonids although new species were described recently by Hanamura et al. (1999) and Bruce (1994). Holthuis (1997: 283) provided a key to genera.

Diagnosis

Rostrum variable, usually short, depressed, immovably attached to remainder of carapace; carapace often sculptured with carinae, spines, or both; antennular flagella simple, without accessory branches; mandible without incisor process or palp; second maxilliped with terminal segment semicircular, attached diagonally to penultimate segment; first pair of pereiopods subchelate, second pair (if present) with undivided carpus. (After Chace 1984).
