Introduction

The family Cepheidae contains four genera, Cephea PĂ©ron & Lesueur, 1810, Cotylorhiza L. Agassiz, 1862, Netrostoma Schultze, 1898 and Polyrhiza L. Agassiz, 1862, the latter of which has long been thought to be doubtful.

The cepheids are well represented in Australia, with Cephea and Netrostoma both common throughout our tropical waters. They are easy to spot from a distance, with large gelatinous papillae or knobs decorating the exumbrellar surface of the bell.

Diagnosis

Kolpophorae with radial subumbrellar muscles. With eight rhopalar radial canals. Without a ring canal. With four more or less separated subgenital cavities. Subgenital ostia small, round. Stomach octagonal, with eight primary canals.
