Introduction
The family Centrophoridae currently comprises two genera and about 17 species (Last & Stevens 2009). Both genera and eight species are found in Australian waters. Species are normally found near the bottom on the continental shelf and slope of all oceans. Maximum size is around 1.6 m.
Last & Stevens (1994, 2009), Compagno & Niem (1998) and Compagno et al. (2005) treated the Australian species and Compagno (1984) treated all described species. However, several taxonomic problems still exist, particularly with Centrophorus. White et al2013 revised one group of Centrophorus. The classification of the group has varied considerably in the literature. Compagno (1984) assigned Oxynotus, which had been included in the family to a separate family, and Shirai (1992) presented a different classification for the group.
