Introduction
The family Campylonotidae comprises a single genus, Campylonotus, represented in southern Australian waters by a deep water shrimp, C. rathbunae Schmitt.
Diagnosis
Dorsal antennular flagellum without accessory branch. Pereiopods with epipods; without exopods; anterior four pairs with arthrobranch. First pair of pereiopods chelate; usually more slender than, rarely subequal to, second. Second pair of pereiopods subequal; with undivided carpus. First maxilliped with exopod not terminating distally in broad, semidetached lobe; caridean lobe of exopod well developed; endite not unusually large, with well-developed exopodal flagellum. Second maxilliped with segments arranged in usual serial manner; terminal segment applied as narrow strip to mesial margin of penultimate segment; with exopod. Third maxilliped slender, pereiopod-like, with exopod. Mandible not bifurcate, incisor and molar processes not separated by distinct sinus; with palp. First maxilla with distal endite not unusually large; proximal endite not reduced or absent. Second maxilla with distal endite mesially bilobate, proximal endite incised near distal margin; scaphognathite narrowly produced proximally into branchial chamber. (Derived from Chace 1992).
