Subtribe Buprestina Leach, 1815

Introduction

The nominate buprestine subtribe contains genera that are as yet unplaced or are of extra-Australian origin except for an apparently introduced species. An important publication in defining the concepts of this group was by Kurosawa (1988), where he treated the Buprestis group from a global perspective and included the Australian genus Neobuprestis Kerremans.

The genus Balthasarella Obenberger was original thought by that author to be of the polycestine lineage but it is clearly related to Neobuprestis. Neobuprestis itself appears to be a polyphyletic genus which clearly requires revision.

Buprestina Obenberger is enigmatic regarding correct subtribal placement and might as easily be placed in Bubastina.
