Tribe Breddiniolini Fennah, 1950

Compiler and date details

11 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This tribe was originally placed in the family Achilidae with two genera, Breddiniola Muir in West Africa and Breddiniolella Fennah in Fiji. The tribe was transferred to the Derbidae on the basis of the structures of the male genitalia and the presence of crater-like wax pores on the male abdomen by Emeljanov & Fletcher (2004) who added a third genus, Hemielissum Emeljanov & Fletcher from Australia.

Diagnosis

Vertex transverse, subquadrate, frons with lateral carinae produced anteriorly, clypeus carinate laterally and medially, rostrum with subapical segment longer than apical, antennae exposed dorsally, not sunk in a pit, second segment ovoid, ocelli not touching eyes, eyes emarginate posteriorly. Pronotum relatively long at side with lateral carinae enclosing a circular fovea; mesonotum longer than vertex and pronotum combined, obsoletely tricarinate. Pro-tibiae shorter than femora with trochanters, post-tibiae with three spines. Tegmina relatively broad, clavus terminating distad of middle, Sc and R not forming a common stalk. The species of this tribe are almost wholly piceous (Fennah 1950).

Monophyly of the tribe Breddiniolini is confirmed by at least two reliable synapomorphies: cup-like depressions on the sides of the pronotum and configuration of the margin of the eyes that has two deep concavities with a narrow or isolated part of the eye extending between them (Emeljanov & Fletcher 2004).
