Subfamily Brachystomatinae Melander, 1908
Compiler and date details
February 2012 - Scott Ginn, Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia
- Brachystomatinae Melander, 1908.
Type genus:
Brachystoma Meigen, 1822.
Introduction
Brachystomatidae was established as family of empidoid flies, following Sinclair & Cumming's (2006) revised classification of the Empidoidea. Wahlberg & Johanson (2018) bring the taxon back to the subfamily rank within the Empididae.
The Australian fauna currently consists of 20 species from three genera. Ceratomerus is the most speciose genus with 18 species, based largely on the work of Sinclair (2003). Species of this genus are characteristically found resting on rocks along streams in upland areas.
