Diagnosis

The morphology of the trunk and particularly of its posterior end shows without any doubt that this species cannot be placed in any species of Brachiella previously described. As far as can be judged on the basis of the information available, it cannot be accommodated in any other genus. It must be pointed out, however, that there are several differences between B. magna and a typical Brachiella. They are evident in the structure of the second antenna and of the first maxilla. In a typical Brachiella the latter limb has its exopod in ventral, rather than lateral position, with stem much shorter and the terminal setae longer than in B. magna. Assuming that the absence of the basal spine on the ventral aspect of the subchela of the maxilliped is not an artifact, it also provides a point of difference. The species needs to be studied in greater detail.
