Diagnosis

Carapace more or less xanthoid in shape, broader than long, dorsally convex; surface with regions generally well defined; more or less setose. Anterolateral and posterolateral margins well delineated; anterolateral margin typically cut into four lobes or teeth, but may be entire and granular (Calvactaea), last lobe often continued onto posterobranchial region by a transverse crest. Antennules folded longitudinally or transversely. Buccal cavern narrow and oval or quadrangular. Third maxilliped sometimes highly modified, elongate and pediform, or broad. Chelipeds subequal and similar, or sometimes moderately unequal; fingers thin and acute, usually crossing at their extremities.
