Genus Baiami Lehtinen, 1967

Introduction

The genus Baiami as originally erected by Lehtinen (1967) included both New Caledonian and Australian species. Gray (1981) first described the male of the type species, Baiami volucripes (Simon, 1908) and excluded the non-Australian species from the genus (these were later redescribed in the new desid genus Canala Gray, 1992). Several species in the genus Baiami are troglophilic and frequently found in cave entrance and twilight zones. The webs are large or small cribellate sheet webs with a retreat, similar to those recorded for spiders in the subfamily Borralinae Gray & Smith, 2008. As in the borraline genera, spiders run on the underside of the sheet. Species of Baiami are recorded from forested areas of southern Australia, both in the east (South Australia and Victoria) and the west. The related, but fully troglobitic, genus Tartarus Gray, 1973 is found in the arid zone between the eastern and western populations of Baiami.
