Genus Bagous Germar, 1817
Taxonomic Decision for Subgeneric Arrangement

Introduction
Caldara et al. (2017) state that '…Infrageneric classification of the genus Bagous is controversial. … three large complexes of species are maximally, or nearly maximally supported: subgenera Parabagous, Hydronoplus and Hydrillaebagous new subgenus.' They remove Hydronomus Schoenherr, 1825 from synonymy, reinstating it as a valid genus — monotypic, but Hydronomus alismatis (Marsham, 1802) is not known from Australia. Memptorrhynchus Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1960 removed from synonymy, reinstated as valid genus by Caldara et al. (2017); comprises African, Palaearctic and Oriental species, not known from Australia. Parabagous Schilsky, 1907 (synonym Fontenelleus Hoffmann, 1962) is resurrected to become a subgenus of Bagous, not known from Australia.
