Family BOTHRIOCEPHALIDAE Blanchard, 1849
Compiler and date details
30 June 2007 - Ian Beveridge & Malcolm Jones
Introduction
Cestodes of this family have a dorsal, median genital pore and the uterus empties to the exterior through a submedian ventral pore. Vitelline follicles are scattered or occur in two lateral groups. All are parasites of teleosts (Bray et al. 1994).
Only two species belonging to this family have so far been reported from Australia. One of them, Bothriocephalus acheilognathis Yamaguti, 1934, was probably imported with European carp and has now spread to native fish. Only one endemic species of Bothriocephalus has been collected but it has not yet been described.
