Tribe Austroagalloidini Evans, 1938

Compiler and date details

24 May 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Previously treated as a subfamily, but placed as a tribe of Eurymelinae following Xue et al. (2020). The tribe contains only the type genus (Austroagalloides) and is endemic to Australia. The eight species are distributed variously across all states and all appear to be associated with the genus Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). The identities of the different species have not been clearly defined other than by colour. The subfamily is primarily distributed across the south of the continent although records from the northern tropics are known.

Diagnosis

The head in most species lies in three distinct planes, and consists of a wide crown which is entirely made up of the vertex, and which is separated from the rest of the head by a transverse ridge, followed at right angles by a more or less rectangular area bounded by the eyes laterally and the antennal ledges anteriorly. The only sutures in this area are the frontal sutures that terminate close to the ocelli. The anterior portion of the head is more or less parallel to the crown. The pronotum narrows laterally, and the bases of the tegmina lie close behind the eyes. The tegmina are long, narrow, and steeply tectiform, and have a very narrow appendix or none at all, and with the wings R2+3 is incorporated in the costal margin and not distinct. The hind tibiae have an armature of weak spines, either evenly spaced or reduced in numbers. When the insect is at rest the proximal ends do not lie as far forward as the propleurae (Evans 1938).
