Species Argas australiensis Kohls & Hoogstraal, 1962

Introduction

The species Argas vespertilionis (Latreille) has been recorded from Australia by a number of authors, including Taylor (1911), Ferguson (1925) and Fielding (1926). The identity of these specimens has not been confirmed, and it is possible that they represent Argas australiensis (see Hoogstraal & Kohls, 1962). This uncertainty led Hoogstraal et al. (1968) to record them as the "Argas vespertilionis group". Hoogstraal (1956) also referred to the presence of the Argas vespertilionis group in Australia. These records are here considered provisionally as C. australiensis until adults can be reared to confirm their identity.
