Species Aplanodes australiae (Kirkaldy, 1907)

Compiler and date details

3 December 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

The only species of Aplanodes was redescribed by Fennah (1965) who provided figures of the head, tegmen and male and female genitalia. The illustration of the tegmen shows an arcuate dark marking in the apical part beyond the apex of the clavus but Kirkaldy's (1907) original description just states "Tegmina hyaline". Fennah (1965) listed a male and a female specimen from near Brisbane in SE Queensland.

Diagnosis

Differs from most of the other species included in Criomorphus by the frontal keels being separated, though close together, during their entire length; the antennae reach beyond the base of the clypeus. Dark fuscous or pitchy, frons and legs a little paler, the former with five or six tiny paler spots on each side; clypeal keels and lateral keels of frons, antennae, markings on legs, &c., brownish testaceous. Tegmina hyaline. Male pygophore pitchy. Length 3.3 mm. (Kirkaldy 1907)

Anal segment of male rather large, apical margin transverse, lateroapical angle of left side strongly produced ventrad in a stout subspinose process. Pygofer rather long, dorsolateral angles not produced, lateral margins in profile convex; diaphragm with dorsal margin deeply concave, narrow in middle portion, and strongly produced caudad in a pair of spinose processes, which are closely apposed basally but diverge moderately towards apex; no medioventral process present. Aedeagus long, porrect caudad, slightly deflexed at tip, a small tooth dorsally near middle, a row along middle of right side, and a few ventro-laterally on right; orifice ventrally at apex, rather long. Genital styles moderately long, rather narrow and tapering, directed dorsad and upcurved apically, outer margin shallowly convex, inner margin concave with a small bluntly angulate eminence in distal third. Seventh (pregenital) sternite of female relatively large, horse-shoe shaped, flattened dorsoventrally, each limb acute at apex. First valvifers, as exposed in ventral view, narrow, of approximately equal width throughout, not at all produced mesad at base. (Fennah 1965)
