Genus Anoplius Dufour, 1834
Introduction
Anoplius Dufour, 1834 is a large genus with several subgenera. Psammochares Fabricius, 1796 has been suppressed (ICZN1946), but has as its type Sphex fusca Linnaeus, 1761, which is a synonym of Sphex viatica Linnaeus 1758, currrently placed in Anoplius. Between 1910 and 1917 Turner described or transfered several species to Psammochares, where they have remained unnoticed. Unlike the situation in Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 (see below) there is no dispute over the validity of the subgenera and consequently, those species not currently placed in subgenera are here listed as unplaced, rather than listed in Anoplius s. l.
