Superorder ACANTHOPTERYGII
Introduction
The superorder Acanthopterygii comprises 13 orders, and almost half of all known species of fishes. Eleven of the orders are known from Australia and include about one quarter of the fish species found in Australian waters. The group contains a larger number of freshwater species belonging to groups not native to Australia. Nelson (2006) summarised details of the classification and relationships of the group.
