Family ATEMNIDAE Kishida, 1929

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

This is a family of medium to large pseudoscorpions that are usually found in corticolous habitats, although some species are found under rocks or in soil. Currently 20 genera and more than 180 species are recognised (Harvey 1991), the majority described from Asia and Africa. Two subfamilies have been described, Atemninae and Miratemninae, but only the former has been recorded from Australia.

Diagnosis

The Atemnidae can be distinguished easily from other cheliferoids by the lack of a venom apparatus in the movable chelal finger.
