Family ASTERNOSEIIDAE Kethley, 1977
Introduction
Walter & Proctor (1998) and Beaulieu & Walter (2007) reported an undescribed genus of Asternoseiidae near Asternoseius from Queensland, and Lindquist et al. (2009) described the family Asternoseiidae as diverse in Australia, but none of the Australian taxa has so far been described or identified. Almost nothing is known of this family, except that Kethley (1977) recognised two named species and several undescribed species in an undescribed genus. Costa (1962) described a new species from the nest of a rodent, and referred to many undescribed species in Africa, and Athias-Henriot (1961) recorded a species from several sites around the Mediterranean.
Valle (1954) proposed the name Asternoseiidae for this family, but did not provide any diagnosis or description. The family name is therefore not available from that source, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
