Family AGELENIDAE C.L. Koch, 1837

Introduction

As with many families in Australia, the boundaries of the Agelenidae are unclear as the genera merge into those often included in the Amaurobiidae, Desidae or lately the Amphinectidae.

 

Diagnosis

Large (8–30mm) entelegyne spiders. Eyes: 8; group about 0.5-0.7 of headwidth; in two rows; back row wider; PME circular to oval or rounded rectangular. Chelicerae: pro- and retromargins with 3 or more teeth. Maxillae longer than wide; straight; grooves diagonal. Labium longer than wide; rectangular. Spinnerets: posterior lateral spinnerets longest, cylindrical, segments equal in length, apical segment about as long as one diameter or slightly longer. Anterior lateral spinnerets separated by about 1/2 of their diameter. Colulus wide. Legs. Prograde; leg I and/or II longer than others; tarsi predistally with or without pallid diagonal fracture; retrocoxal hymen on leg I present. 3 claws; third claw dentate. Male palp with tibial apophysis.
