Family DISCOURELLIDAE Baker & Wharton, 1952

Introduction

The cosmopolitan family Discourellidae as used here includes about 80 species. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1993) placed all the species in the single genus Discourella. They arranged the species in a series of species groups, which were previously treated as genera or subgenera. Discourellids are found in soil, leaf litter, rotting wood, straw, dung, and moss (Hirschmann & Wisniewski 1993). The European fauna was reviewed by Karg (1989) and Mašán (2001). The family is known from Australia only from a single highly ornamented species described from a forest site near Canberra (Hiramatsu 1983).
