Species Chlamydopteryx sidnicus (Kirkaldy, 1906)

Compiler and date details

8 April 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

In his original description, Kirkaldy (1906) provides a note that the colour and shape of the male “pygofers” are “similar to the previous” (ie Issus vulturnus). This indicates that he examined at least one male. The female specimen examined by Gnezdilov & Fletcher (2010) was labelled as “holotype” but has not been validated as such by publication (see Medler 1987) and was regarded as a syntype by Gnezdilov & Fletcher (2010). If a male specimen can be found in BPBM matching the original collection details, then it is available to be designated as lectotype. The species is the only one of the genus not recorded in Queensland. It is known from the Sydney basin and the Dorrigo region of New South Wales.

Diagnosis

Allied to the previous species [C. vulturnus (Kirkaldy)], but smaller. The colorings and picturation are practically the same except that within the round carina of the frons, the color is castaneous, suffused with blackish on the disk, and there is a short, transverse, whitish stripe in the middle. Vertex about as wide as an eye, a trifle more transverse than in vulturnus; scutellum scarcely longer than the pronotum. Frons longer than wide, more swollen medianly and more granulate outside the round carina, lateral margins less divergent. Cubital vein forked a little nearer the apex than the median. Male: pygofers similar to the previous. Length: 5 1/4 mm. (Kirkaldy 1906).
