Vol. 4 identified specimen No. 683 as a type of M. fuscipes; it records that the specimen was presented by Charles Darwin in Jan. 1837 and it equates number 683 with what is apparently a Darwin collection number, D.3564; specimen No. 683 is No. 520 of Waterhouse, G.R. 1838. Catalogue of the Mammalia Preserved in the Museum of the Zoological Society of London. London : The Zoological Society of London 68 pp. [54]; the whereabouts of Waterhouse's type material of M. fuscipes is unknown].

   Neotype WAM M6634 ♀ skin & skull, Crown Grant No. 24, 'Little Grove' on Princess Royal Harbour, approx. 4 miles due S of Mount Melville, Albany, WA.
