Introduction

Briansmaithia ptychomphala is distinguished from B. jackstirlingi by the presence of bolder radial ribs. The animal is orange-brown with dark eye stalks.

Diagnosis

Shell large, yellow to deep red-brown with yellowish underside, subglobose with a dome-shaped spire; protoconch smooth apart from a few oblique striations at the end, teleoconch sculpture of bold radial ribs above becoming obsolete toward the end of the body whorl, smooth below; umbilicus narrow, deep V-shaped; diameter 29.5mm.
