Diagnosis

Carapace wide, broadened anteriorly; dorsal surface scabrous or terraced; orbits directed anteriorly; front wide; rostrum pointed, or trifid (fossil forms). Thoracic sternum strongly deflexed at level of sternite 7, sternite 8 perpendicular to preceding sternite; sternite 4 wide; sternite 5 only lateral; sternite 6 linear, especially between coxae of third pereiopod. Chelipeds with short flattened propodus; dactylus short, bent against anterior border of palm; fixed finger very short. Spermathecal apertures close together, longitudinal in outline.
