Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

 

Introduction

This highly variable species is distributed widely across Australia both in tropical and temperate zones, and coastal and inland regions. The shape of the head distinguishes it from other Australian species of Hecalus.

Diagnosis

Nitidulus, substramineo-albidus ; puncto pone apicem clavi nigro; capite longiore quam lato. Praecedenti maxime affinis, forma capitis excepta vix differt. Caput laeve, circiter tertia parte longius quam inter oculos latum, thorace fere duplo et dimidio longius, lateribus ultra medium parallelis, marginibus attenuatis, leviter reflexis; vertice ante medium latera versus longitrorsum levissime impresso. Thorax posterius transversim strigosus, lateribus parallelis. Tegmina opaca. Alae albido-hyalinae. Oculi fusci. ♀ — Long. 10 mm; lat. thor. 2¼ mm. (Stål 1864).

General coloration pale green. ♂ — Face of head convex; anterior apex broad, yellow, margined on each side with a narrow brown stripe. Crown convex in the centre, slightly longer than the pronotum. Pronotum rectangular. Tegmen pale hyaline green; veins green. ♀ — Face of head convex except for the posterior marginal rim; anterior apex narrow, green. Crown more than twice the length of the pronotum, convex with a flattened margin rim or flat with an upturned marginal rim. Shape of head hightly variable. Pronotum and tegmen as in ♂. The tegmina may be fully developed, sub-brachypterous or brachypterous. (Evans 1966).
