Larva: herbivore (associated flora: Ruellia tuberosa L. [ACANTHACEAE]; Hygrophila angustifolia R.Br. [ACANTHACEAE]).

Zizula hylax hylax (Fabricius, 1775)

Papilio hylax Fabricius, J.C. 1775. Systema Entomologiae sistens insectorum classes, ordines, genera, species, adiectis synonymis, locis, descriptionibus, observationibus. Flensburgi et Lipsiae : Libraria Kortii 8 vols xxx 832 pp. [526].
Type data: lectotype ZMUC *; Fabricius in the original description did not indicate the number of specimens described; Corbet, A.S. 1940. The identity of the Fabrician species Papilio sphinx and Papilio hylax. The Entomologist 73: 275–277 [275] (referred to a single specimen in ZMUC but did not refer to it as a type); Zimsen, E. 1964. The Type Material of I.C. Fabricius. Copenhagen : Munksgaard 656 pp. [518] (listed the species but did not locate a specimen).
Subsequent designation: Hemming, F. 1967. The generic names of the butterflies and their type-species (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera). Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Entomology Suppl. 9: 1–509 [467] (referred to a type); Parsons, M.J. 1998. The Butterflies of Papua New Guinea; their systematics and biology. Type locality: Eastern India (India orientali designated in original description; Fabricius later gave Malabar (as Malabaria), India).
