Order ZOANTHIDEA Gray, 1840
Colonial Anemones, Sea Mats
- Zoanthidea Gray, 1840.
Introduction
Sometimes mistaken for true corals, but more closely related to sea amenones, zoanthids are mainly colonial organisms whose individual polyps are embedded in a semi-soft matrix known as the mesoglea. Individuals are joined together within the mesoglea and some species find support by incorporating the bottom sediments into the mesoglea as they grow. Zoanthids are often inconspicuous on reefs but can also occur in vibrant colours. Like hard corals, zoanthids may reproduce asexually or by spawning, and are affected by coral bleaching. Consulting specialist for this section was Dr. John Ryland.
