Genus Varcia Stål, 1870

Compiler and date details

27 April 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This genus is represented across the Oriental region and into New Guinea. Two species were described from Christmas Island. Metcalf (1954) indicates that Stål (1870) created a type species by monotypy but Stål (1870) included the description of two species, V. nigrovittata Stål from the Philppines and V. hilaris (Stål) from Indonesia. It was Distant's (1906) reference to V. nigrovittata as the type species which established the type species by subsequent designation. Kirkaldy (1906) considered Melichar's (1898) use of the name Varcia to differ from Stål's original and created a new name Varcilla for Varcia Melichar. He also considered Aphanophrys Melichar (1898) to be a synonym of Varcia Stål. Metcalf (1954) listed Varcilla Kirkaldy as a synonym of Varcia Stål and used Aphanophrys Melichar, with the type species Varcia hilaris (Stål), as a subgenus of Varcia.
