Species Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank, 1781)

Introduction

A recent revision of the genus Tyrophagus by Fan & Zhang (2007a) cast doubt on the identity and correct name of the species that has commonly been referred to as Tyrophagus putrescentiae. Fan & Zhang (2007a) showed that the name Tyrophagus putrescentiae has been applied to two different species. They proposed the new name Tyrophagus communis Fan & Zhang, 2007 for the more common of those species, and used the name Tyrophagus putrescentiae for the less common species. Klimov & OConnor (2009, 2010) argued that the usage of the name Tyrophagus putrescentiae for the common species should be maintained, and proposed the new name Tyrophagus fanetzhangorum Klimov & OConnor, 2009 for the less common species. Until this matter is resolved, I have maintained the existing usage of Tyrophagus putrescentiae for the common species that inhabits stored food all over the world.

This species is the subject of a huge amount of literature, and only selected references are listed here, especially those of Australian relevance.
