Genus Turris Röding, 1798
- Turris Röding, P.F. 1798. Museum Boltenianum sive Catalogus cimeliorum e tribus regnis naturae quae olim collegerat Joa. Hamburg : Trappii 199 pp. [Date published September 1798] [123] ["Turris Müller, 1766", was published in a work placed on the Official Index by Opinion 701, and thus does not invalidate Turris Röding, 1798. "Turris Fabricius, 1823" [Fortegnelse over afgange Biskop Fabriciusses efterladte Naturalier: 83; not available: published in a work placed on the Official Index by Opinion 521] is listed in nomenclators as a separate name, but is clearly the same name (Turris babylonica also included). Senior objective synonym of Pleurotoma].
Type species:
Murex babylonus Gmelin by subsequent designation ((= Murex bablylonius Linnaeus, 1758)). Versammlung Deutscher Naturforscher und Aerzte in Kiel, (1846): 115, 217] are incorrect subsequent spellings. See also Pleurotomus and Pleurotomites. Invalid: junior objective synonym of Turris, with the same type species].
Type species:
Murex babylonius Linnaeus, 1758 by monotypy. - Pleurotomus Montfort, P.D. de 1810. Conchyliologie Systematique, et Classification Methodique des Coquilles. Paris : F. Schoell Tome 2 676 + 16 pp. [534] [Unjustified emendation of Pleurotoma].
Type species:
Murex babylonius Montfort, 1810 by monotypy. - Turris Montfort, P.D. de 1810. Conchyliologie Systematique, et Classification Methodique des Coquilles. Paris : F. Schoell Tome 2 676 + 16 pp. [538] [Invalid: junior homonym of Turris Röding, 1798. Turris [Gray, 1857, Guide to the systematic distribution of Mollusca in the British Museum, 1: 23] is listed in Neave, 1940, Nomenclator Zoologicus, 4: 594, as a separate entry, but is apparently used in the sense of Montfort for miters and not turrids. See also Vulpecula and Turricula H. & A. Adams, 1853.].
Type species:
Voluta vulpecula Linnaeus, 1758 by original designation (Created as a genus of Mitridae. Invalid: junior homonym of Turris Röding, 1798 [Turridae]).
