Introduction

Here used in a restricted sense including two subfamilies usually included in the Gryllidae. Characterised by having bristles on the head, the hind tibia without spines between or above spurs; head normal, not prognathous. Found on the ground in wet areas or in rainforsts, on leaf surfaces or in herbaceous vegetation. Males wingless, short-winged or fully winged and capable of flight, females similarly winged or wingless. Often numerous. Singing and silent forms are known.
