Introduction

This tribe, originally a subfamily of the Poekillopteridae (= Flatidae), was transferred as subfamily Tonginae to the Acanaloniidae by Emeljanov (1999) which placed the Acanaloniidae in Australia for the first time. However, it was moved to the Nogodinidae and downgraded to tribe status by Gnezdilov (2007) on the basis of the structure of the male genitalia. The tribe is reasonably well represented in Australia with seven genera although two of these are monotypic genera restricted to Christmas Island, geographically closer to Indonesia than Australia.

Misidentifications

Nogodinidae: Hemitonga dyakana (Kirkaldy, 1907) [the Australian record of this species from Borneo was based on a misidentification by Melichar (1906) of Lollius acutipennis Kirkaldy from North Queensland]

Nogodinidae: Paratonga truncaticeps Schmidt, 1910 [this New Guinean species was recorded from "Mt Cameron, Tasmania", by Fennah (1954) but it is presumed this is in error for Mt Cameron Range, Central Province, New Guinea]

Diagnosis

Ocellar scars present. Post tibiae each with one or two spines laterally; basal metatarsal joint with more than two spines apically. Tegulae not distinct. Tegmina with basal cell moderately distinct, costal vein distinctly submarginal. Ovipositor with third valvulae minutel denticulate along distal dorsal margin, upper apical margin, and to a slight extent even on external dorsal surface. Aedeagus with a pair of prominent lobes dorsolaterally at base (Fennah 1954).
