Annals and Magazine of Natural History 3 17: 285-287 [286] [Butler (1866) referred to the specimen of Euodina [sic] joanna as 'Closely allied to E. abeona Donov., of which it has been hitherto supposed to be a variety; Waterhouse, G.A. 1914. A monograph of the genus Tisiphone Hübner. Australian Zoologist 1(1): 15–19 pl. 1 (3) as Tisiphone abeona joanna (Butler, 1866), stated 'At this place (Port Macquarie) I have recently captured a long series [>100] of joanna, including some nearly identical with the type: but as other specimens show almost every gradation between nearly typical abeona and nearly typical morrisi, I have thought it wise to give a large number of figures. This race I regard as a composite one made up of every intergrade between two stable races, with the characters combined in varying degree.'; Waterhouse, G.A. 1922. Presidential address. An account of some breeding experiments with the satyrine genus Tisiphone. Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. 47(1): ix–xvii pls i–iii [publication date: Anon. 1929. A further account of breeding experiments with the satyrine genus Tisiphone. Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. 47(1): xiii–xvi pls 1–2 [publication date: Anon. 1929. List showing dates of publication of parts of the Proceedings for each year. Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. Index to vols 1–50 (1875–1925).] (xvi) concluded that Tisiphone abeona joanna is a hybrid race of aurelia and morrisi); Conroy, B.A. 1971. Geographic variation and speciation in the swordgrass brown butterfly, Tisiphone abeona Donovan. Unpubl. Ph.D. Thesis, The University of Sydney, Sydney. 232 pp. (64) discussed variation in the race joanna; Common, I.F.B. & Waterhouse, D.F. 1981. Butterflies of Australia. Sydney : Angus & Robertson xiv 682 pp. 49 pls (366) recognised joanna as a hybrid population of aurelia and morrisi and not as a separate subspecies of Tisiphone abeona (Donovan, 1805)].
